Day 22: The Cancer Journey

Day 22: After a whirlwind of shock and appointments with doctors one of the biggest challenges for someone with cancer is fighting to keep the weight on when you are sick and don’t feel like eating.

The first thought is to eat super healthy, lots of fruits and veggies. Juice them, blend them, etc. But what I have found out is that doesn’t help you keep your body weight up. Yes, it provides lots of nutrients, but not a lot of calories.

These are rough estimates:
5 stalks of celery = 25 calories
1 medium carrot = 25 calories
20 medium carrots = 500 calories
1 Romain heart = 8 calories (this is a dieters dream food, it fills you up with almost no calories)
1 11ounce (medium/large) cucumber = 45 calories

If you are trying to lose weight, eating these or juicing them would work great. They provide a lot of nutrients, but poor on calories and fat intake.

To keep the calories and fat on in an easy way, this is what I have found that is helping my wife.

1 – can of coconut milk (sweetened) approx:
130 calories, 12 grams of saturated fat, 25mg of sodium to help with water retention

1 can of Orgain (like boost) Gluten free, organic, 16g of protein, 21 vitamins and minerals and 250 calories in one bottle (11 fl oz)

1 banana – 105 calories

4 scoops of Plantfusion complete meal which is 400 calories. ( i like this because it is vegan, dairy free, gluten free, soy free, loaded with protein)

Mix all of this in a blender and you have a 12-14 oz drink that has approximately 885 calories.

If you substitute the banana for an avacado, they typically have 300 calories in a large avacado, then you can push the calorie intake to 1080 per jar. I use canning jars, because they have the measurement on the side for volume.
